Summertime is on the way!
Hot weather, weekend trips to the lake or beach, and yes, the added stress of fitting into those swim trunks & bathing suits.
People are burning up the treadmills, ellipticals, & exercise bikes for hours these days all in the hopes of burning body fat.
The problem is what they're mostly doing is burning up TIME.
So here's a little helpful hint for all of you...DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME with long sessions of boring CARDIO.
Energy used during cardio is very misunderstood. The short version of it is that your body uses very little, if any, stored body fat during this period of time.
Now this is not a knock on Cardiovascular Exercises....The benefits you get from doing cardio training is in the effect it has on your resting metabolic rate ( your metabolism ).
When you increase your metabolism, you increase your body's overall fat burning abilities.
The problem with long durations of cardio is that it has very little impact on your metabolism. So walking the treadmill or elliptical for 30, 40, 50 min is not going to transform your body the way you expected it to, and actually can sometimes do more harm than good.
Long, low intensity cardio training can often break down muscle tissue, which slows your metabolism. This is why people become frustrated after the first few weeks of cardio training at the gym because they're not seeing the results they had hoped they would.
So what's the answer?
Treadmills, ellipticals, or weight training are all great. It's more about HOW you train.
Shorter durations, more intensity, & total body. Combine that with healthy eating and your body will begin transforming itself!
